The Superkids Reading program is the literacy curriculum that is used for kindergarten through second grade in St. Nicholas of Tolentine. This literacy program teaches all aspects of reading integrated with the language arts by combining rigorous instruction with engaging materials.
Kindergarten Instructional Overview 1. Word Work- In word work, Superkids will teach children... -The letters of the alphabet, one sound for each letter (short vowel) -How to decode words by blending letter-sounds together -How to write the uppercase and lowercase forms of each letter in the alphabet, in addition to encoding (spelling) words with letters and sounds
2. Reading- Due to Superkids teaching children letter-sound correspondence, children will soon be able to read short decodable texts themselves. The lessons that are designed for each text guide children’s comprehension of a story by building background knowledge and vocabulary before reading.
3. Writing- In writing, Superkids teaches children how to communicate their ideas through drawing and by writing letters, words, and sentences. Children will also learn how to write narratives, opinions, informative/explanatory texts, and more.
