Our school participates in an in school Big Brother/Big Sister program, pairing each kindergarten student with an eighth grade student. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to join together and participate in several school site-based activities, projects and church events that are supervised by teachers.
This program is beneficial to both the kindergarten and eighth grade students. In the beginning, school is sometimes intimidating for kindergarten children. Thus, having an older buddy in the building allows kindergarteners to develop a sense safety and comfort. By forming a special bond with their eighth grade buddy will enable kindergarteners to look up to them as a mentor. On the other hand, this program teaches eighth graders the significance of volunteering and setting good examples for their kindergarten buddy.
